Automated Breast Ultrasound for Detection of Cancer
October 15, 2024
According to the American Cancer Society® (ACS), approximately 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
Screening can save lives
Regular self-exams and an annual screening mammogram are recommended to detect breast cancer as early as possible. Women should begin breast self-exams by the age of 20 and they should perform the exams monthly. Talk to your primary care provider (PCP) to learn how to perform self-exams and when they are right for you.
Starting between the ages of 40 and 50, women should be screened annually for breast cancer. St. Mary’s Women’s Imaging offers 2D and 3D Mammography, as well as automated breast ultrasound (ABUS).
What is ABUS?
Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) is a medical imaging technique used primarily for breast cancer screening, particularly in women with dense breast tissue. Unlike traditional hand-held ultrasound, ABUS uses a specialized machine that automates the scanning process, providing a more standardized and reproducible imaging technique.
Key features of ABUS
- ABUS systems standardize the imaging process, which can help reduce variability in results.
- The automation allows for a more thorough examination of the breast, covering more area than hand-held ultrasound.
- Patients may find the procedure more comfortable since it doesn't require the same level of operator manipulation as traditional ultrasound.
- ABUS is often used as an adjunct to mammography, especially for women with dense breasts, where mammograms may be less effective.
- It can help in the detection of small tumors and other abnormalities that may not be visible on mammograms.
Who is a candidate for ABUS?
ABUS is generally recommended for women at average risk for breast cancer but who have dense breast tissue, as it can enhance detection rates in this group. It’s important for patients to discuss their individual risk factors with their healthcare provider to determine the best screening strategy.
